Cathy McNulty, known as The Curl Artist, advises brides to start using a silk hair wrap at least six months before their wedding. This small change to a daily routine can make a huge difference to hair health by reducing friction and damage.

According to the source from OneFabDay, preparing hair for a wedding is a long-term process similar to skincare. Cathy McNulty is evangelical about the benefits of hair wrapping for brides-to-be. She states that starting six months in advance gives hair a chance to repair and look fabulous. She adds that more hydrated, smoother hair has a better chance of lasting from morning until night, which is crucial given unpredictable Irish weather.

What is Hair Wrapping?

Hair wrapping involves covering your hair with a scarf, bonnet, or turban while you sleep to reduce friction. It was traditionally used by women with curly and coily hair to protect their styles and reduce frizz and knots. Using silk or satin for this purpose is highly recommended.

Why Use Silk or Satin?

Using silk or satin is better than cotton because curls glide against the smooth material instead of rubbing. Cathy McNulty explains that when two natural textures, like hair and coarse cotton or wool, rub together, it creates static and frizz. This friction raises the hair cuticle, breaks down the hair fibre, and causes long-term damage.

Silk offers additional benefits. It is hypoallergenic and does not absorb skincare or haircare products, locking in hydration. It is also breathable and adjusts to room temperature, preventing a hot, sweaty head during sleep.

How Wrapping Keeps Hair Healthy

Hair wrapping reduces damage to the hair cuticle from friction. It also prolongs your hairstyle, reducing how often you need to wash and heat-style your hair. "Wrapping your hair will reduce the frequency that you have to wash, blowdry or heatstyle your hair, because in the morning, your hair will still look great," says Cathy McNulty.

She identifies heat as one of the most damaging things for hair, including hot water, as it breaks down the hair fibre, causes colour fade, and contributes to dullness.

How to Wrap Your Hair

Many women, especially those with curly hair, prefer the "pineapple method." This involves securing hair in a high ponytail on top of the head. Cathy McNulty, who has curly hair, loves this method with a turban or bonnet.

She describes her routine: "I wrap my silk scrunchie around my hair once to avoid crease marks or tension on my scalp caused by a tight band." Using a silk pillowcase as well can ensure the turban glides smoothly during sleep.

Other Silk Products to Consider

Introducing other silk or satin products can reduce frizz throughout the day. A silk or satin-lined beanie or baseball cap can significantly reduce frizz when wearing a hat. Using silk scarves instead of wool, or placing a silk scarf inside a wool scarf in winter, can keep you warm and frizz-free.

The source lists several products to consider for a pre-wedding hair care routine, including turbans, bonnets, square scarves, lined caps and beanies, scrunchies, and silk pillowcases.
