Barack and Michelle Obama celebrated their 34th wedding anniversary on October 3. The former first couple marked the occasion by sharing personal tributes to each other on Instagram.

Barack Obama, 65, posted a photo from a recent magazine shoot, showing him looking lovingly at his wife with his arms wrapped around her waist. His caption read, "Happy anniversary, @MichelleObama! I’m still the luckiest guy in the world to be with you." Michelle Obama, 62, shared a montage of videos and photos spanning their life together, set to Stevie Wonder’s 1976 hit ‘As’. She wrote, "Loving you just keeps getting better and better! Happy anniversary, @BarackObama. Here’s to many, many more years of joy, laughter, and memories to come. 💕"

Reflections on their journey

The anniversary posts came a few months after the couple reflected on their relationship in a wide-ranging interview. Barack Obama told the magazine he knew almost immediately that Michelle was a one-of-a-kind woman. He said her integrity, character, smarts, and values would make him better. Just being with her still does, he added. He also credited her with giving their daughters, Malia and Sasha, a foundation that has paid off for them.

Michelle Obama explained that she and her husband are each other’s counterbalance. She said Barack offered her and their family a broader sense of what’s possible in life. He made her think more broadly about what she could do with her Harvard law degree besides be a lawyer. He gave her the courage to try new things. However hard it has been, with all the ups and downs, she said he has her. Barack Obama then chimed in, saying his wife grounds and anchors him. It has worked out alright, he concluded.

How it began

Their love story started in 1989 at a Chicago law firm. Barack Obama was a summer associate whom Michelle Robinson was assigned to mentor. Michelle repeatedly turned him down, thinking dating someone she mentored would be tacky. She finally agreed to go out with him after he offered to quit his job.

Their first date has become legendary. Barack picked Michelle up in a yellow Datsun with a rusted-out passenger floorboard. They visited the Art Institute of Chicago, went for a walk, and saw Spike Lee’s Do the Right Thing. The night ended at a Baskin-Robbins in Hyde Park, where they ate ice cream on the curb and shared their first kiss. Barack later recalled that moment fondly, saying, I kissed her, and it tasted like chocolate.

Life together

The longtime couple married in Chicago on October 3, 1992. Over the next three decades, they raised their two daughters and spent eight years in the White House. They have continued their public service work after leaving Washington. A 3,000-pound boulder and plaque now mark the site of their first kiss on Chicago’s South Side, a sign of how their personal history is woven into the city's fabric. Michelle Obama’s anniversary compilation video highlighted this journey, featuring clips from their 1992 wedding, their time in the White House, and recent snaps of the couple embracing.
