Offley Parish Council has complained about noise and disturbance from The Barn wedding venue near Luton, Bedfordshire. The formal complaints, which will be reviewed by North Herts Council, cite ongoing issues from weekend events including late-night noise, fireworks, and parking disruption.

The council claims disturbances relate to events held on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday. Incidents of noise have reportedly continued late into the night, past 01:00. There have also been two reported drone sightings from the venue. Fireworks were allegedly let off in the car park and on the village green. Parking problems have seen vehicles block residents' driveways, the village green, and grass verges.

The Barn's licence and operating limits

The Barn operates under a North Herts Council licence. This licence permits the sale of alcohol and late-night refreshments until 01:00, with the venue allowed to stay open until 01:30 on weekends. The venue told the BBC that a majority of its events conclude by 23:00 and it rarely operates until midnight. It also states it has on-site parking for up to 70 vehicles.

The Barn's response and mitigation efforts

In response to the complaints, The Barn states it has invested in acoustic soundproofing. It says it has a clear policy prohibiting clients and guests from setting off fireworks and does not permit unauthorised drone use at events. The venue describes itself as a small, family-run business. "The Barn is a small, family-run business and we take our responsibilities to the local community very seriously," it said. It added that it works constructively with relevant authorities and makes every reasonable effort to address legitimate concerns.

Upcoming licensing review and possible outcomes

The concerns will be considered during a North Herts Council licensing sub-committee meeting on 5 October. When issuing a decision notice, the sub-committee has several options. These range from taking no action to modifying the licence conditions or revoking the licence entirely. The Barn states it remains committed to constructive dialogue. "We remain committed to being considerate neighbours and to maintaining constructive dialogue with local residents, Offley Parish Council and North Hertfordshire District Council," it said. Both parties will have an opportunity to put their views to the council before any next steps are taken.
